Abstract The title earboxylic acids, prepared by alkaline hydrolysis of their ethyl esters, thermally decomposed to give ortho ‐aminocinnamonitriles and, in few cases, 3‐unsubstituted 1 H ‐1,2‐benzodiazepines.
