The photochemical reaction of 1 with acrylonitrile gave the cyclobutane adducts II and III, which on treatment with base afforded a novel polycyclic structure IV. Reduction of IV with LAH followed by Eschweiler‐Clarke methylation yielded the polyheterocyclic structure VI.
