A novel method for ring expansion of a heterocycle containing a NCN system to a medium sized diaza‐heterocycle has been demonstrated for the conversion of an isoindolo[2,1‐ a ]‐quinazoline derivative 8 to the 5 H ‐dibenzo [ b,g ] [1,5]diazonine ( 13 ). Attempts to apply this isomerization to heterocyclic systems related to 8 were not successful.
