An improved, high yielding procedure for the preparation of norcocaine from cocaine is described. The synthesis is accomplished by controlling the p H during the potassium permanganate oxidation. A quantitative conversion of N ‐benzoylecgonine methyl ester into norcocaine by dry, hydrogen chloride‐dioxane is also included.
