o ‐ Aminomethylbeiizyl alcohols (X) easily cyclize with phosgene in an aqueous alkaline medium to form 4,5‐dihydro‐2,4‐benzoxazepin‐3(1 H )ones (IV) and with aldehydes in acidic conditions to yield 1,3,4,5‐tetrahydro‐2,4‐benzoxazepines (V). The characteristics and chemical behaviour of these new heterocyclic ring systems are reported.
