Carbamate esters of 4‐hydroxycoumarin were prepared, and their base‐catalyzed and thermal rearrangement to 3‐( N ‐substituted carbamoy])‐4‐hydroxycoumarins were studied. A mechanism for the rearrangement is proposed.
