Four l‐Aryl‐9H‐[3,4‐b]pyridoindoles have been prepared and quaternízed with bromoacetone. The resulting salts were cyclized under acidic conditions to afford 5‐methyl‐14H‐indolo[2,3‐a]phenanthridizinium perchlorate as well as the 2,3‐dimethoxy‐, 2,3‐methylenedioxy‐ and 2‐methoxy‐ derivatives.
