The reaction between 1‐hydroxy‐2‐acetonaphthone and 2‐fluorobenzophenone in basic medium afforded two diastereoisomeric carbonyl dyes whose structures were unambiguously established using spectroscopic methods. A mechanism for the formation of these dyes involving a base‐catalysed addition followed by dehydration and intramolecular aromatic nucleofilic substitution is proposed. J.
