Reaction of N ‐arylisoindolines with benzyne afforded predominantly 10‐arylisoindolo[2,1‐ f ]phenanthridines. On the other hand, N ‐arylisoindolines react with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to give dimethyl 2‐(2‐aryl‐2 H ‐isoindol‐1‐yl)fumarates. Possible reaction mechanisms are discussed. J.
