Let λ( G ) be the line‐distinguishing chromatic number and x ′( G ) the chromatic index of a graph G . We prove the relation λ( G ) ≥ x ′( G ), conjectured by Harary and Plantholt. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
