While superficial masses are usually apparent and easily palpated, it is sometimes difficult to determine whether they are cystic, solid, or mixed. Ultrasound was used to evaluate superficial masses determining their size, relationship to other structures and internal characteristics. In a series of 34 patients, ultrasound was able to differentiate among cystic, solid, or complex masses with a 94% accuracy.
