Abstract Two moles of desferrioxamine B (desferal) combines with one ion of cerium(IV), Fe(IV) and U(VI) to form intensely coloured chelates having molar absorptivities of 3.8 × 10 4 , 5.5 × 10 4 and 1.9 × 10 4 mol −1 cm −1 at 443 nm, 293 nm and 376 nm respectively. The system follows Beer's law up to 1.5 μg ml −1 . The effect of desferal concentration, pH, time and foreign species are studied. The results of analysis of simulated wastes are reported.
