Leachates from the solid urban wastes landfill of Asturias were characterized and treated in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket laboratory reactors. The highest percentage of COD removal was 88% for a hydraulic retention time of 2–4 days. Gas production was close to the theoretical values, with CH 4 content up to 88%. HCl was needed to keep pH neutral, and phosphate was added as nutrient. There was a refractory fraction to the biodegradation of 7%.
