The catalytic behaviour of the series Fe 2 (TeO 3 ) 3 + × % MoO 3 (X = 0–30 mol. %) in the oxidation of propylene in the gaseous phase has been studied. It has been found that the addition of Mo0 3 to the iron tellurite activates the reaction towards the partial oxidation to acrolein. From the characterisation of solids it is possible to conclude that the addition of MoO 3 promotes the crystallinity of the iron tellurite. On the other hand, surface studies of the catalysts show that depending on the MoO 3 loading, this component is present in various states which contribute in different ways to the catalytic action. Some explanations for the observed behaviour are proposed.
