The kinetics of esterification of phthalic anhydride with 2‐ethylhexanol has been studied using the following catalysts‐tetrabutyl titanate (TBT), tetrabutyl zirconate (TBZ) and paratoluene sulphonic acid (PTSA). In each case the kinetic parameters (rate constant, order with respect to various reactants and catalyst, activation energy, collision frequency) have been determined. The titanates and zirconates have been found to be better than the conventionally used acidic catalysts to produce di‐2‐ethylhexyl phthalate.
