The future application of enzymes in organic synthesis is in part dependent on excellent integration with the neighbouring chemical conversions. This paper outlines some of the key issues to be addressed to achieve optimal integration either by modification of preceding (or following) chemical steps, biocatalyst evolution or combinations of these approaches together with process engineering.
