The Italian Society of Virology (SIV) and the Virus Group of theSociety for General Microbiology (SGM) held a joint meeting inOrvieto (18–20th September 2006) aimed at promotinginteractions and collaborations between scientists in Italy andthe British Isles. The standard of the meeting was exceptionallyhigh, with >200 virologists from Italy, the UK and Irelandparticipating in lively oral and poster sessions in the wonderfulsetting provided by the ancient Umbrian citadel. In accordancewith the normal format of the SIV National Meeting theconference transcended all areas of virology. Sessions includedinvited speakers from the UK and Italy together with selectedoral presentation. Topics covered included: General Virologyand Viral Genetics (D. McGeoch & G. Martelli), Virus–HostInteractions (J. Skehel & G. Campadelli-Fiume), Pathogenesis(G. Smith & A. Dolei) Emerging and Zoonotic Infections(J. McCauley & I. Capua), Immunology and Vaccines (N.
