Myoglobin synthesis was compared in cell cultures of leg (red) and breast (white) muscle of chick embryos. In leg muscle cultures a rapidly increasing amino acid incorporation into myoglobin begins two days after muscle cell fusion; in breast muscle cultures no comparable increase was observed. This qualitative difference in cultures of the two muscle cell types provides possibilities for the further study of the mechanism of myoglobin synthesis.
