In order to prevent the polymerization of the ozonide generated in the ozonalysis of cycloalkenes, Professor Hon ingeniously introduced the methyl pyruvate to trap the reaction intermediate, i.e. carbonyl oxide. With the exquisite design and the different reactivity of the functional groups presenting in the intermediates, the methodology provided an efficient and versatile protocol in the synthesis of polyfunctional straightchain hydrocarbons.
