This study demonstrates a simple, rapid, low cost, and straightforward method for synthesis the thioglycerol (TG) modified ZnS QDs. These ZnS QDs were highly stable and when excited with ultraviolet light exhibited strong blue photoluminescence at ∼ 418 nm. In this study, we have successfully demonstrated the applicability of matrix assisted laser desorption ionization‐time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS) for ultrasmall size determination of the TG capped ZnS QDs (∼ 1.5 nm ± 0.03 nm). The result was found to be close to that obtained by the optical (UV/Visible) absorption method (∼ 1.2 nm ± 0.2 nm) and X‐ray diffraction technique (∼ 1.0 nm ± 0.3 nm).
