A new compound: octaiodoanthraquinone (9,10) was synthesized from anthracene by a periodination process under the catalysis of mercury ions at 200˜250 °C. This new compound was also synthesized from anthraquinone (9,10) via a similar process, which verified the mercury‐catalyzed mechanism involved in the synthesis of octaiodoanthraquinone (9,10) from anthracene.
