Aliphatic and aromatic 1,3‐dithiane are oxidized to the corresponding carbonyl compounds in good yields under mild conditions by N,N′ ‐diiodo‐ N,N′ ‐1,2‐ethanediyl‐ bis ( p ‐toluenesulphonamide) [NIBTS] and silver nitrate.
