Six series of 4–4′‐ n ‐alkoxy‐2′,3′,5′,6′‐tetrafluorobiphenyl carboxylate esters have been synthesized. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated and measured by optical polarizing microscopy and DSC. The results show that tar get compounds bearing a nitro group as terminal group exhibit wide mesophases. However, their terminal groups are trifluoromethyl, fluorine atoms, chlorine atoms, bromine atoms and hydrogen atoms, which aren't mesogens.
