The absorption and fluorescence properties of a series of 18 indocarbocyanine dyes in organic solvents have been determined. The wavelengths of the absorption and fluorescence maxima, the fluorescence lifetimes and the fluorescence quantum yields relative to the benzo‐15‐crown‐5‐substituted phthalocyanine have been measured. The results are discussed in relation to the molecular structures or the dye studied.
