A new synthesis of antihyperlipoproteinemic agent 2,2‐dimethyl‐5‐(2,5‐dimethylphenoxy)pentanoic acid (gemfibrozil, 1) is developed via hydrogenolysis of a novel β‐lactone 6, prepared from [2+2] cycloaddition of 3‐(2,5‐dimethylphenoxy)propanal with dimethylketene. The mild conditions applied in this process are especially convenient for the preparation of gemfibrozil on an industrial scale of production.
