Abstract The presence of catecholtannins and saponin in Paris formosana Hayata was observed. The crude saponin has been isolated. Diosgenin was found to be the sapogenin while glucose and rhamnose were found to be the components of the sugar chain. Glucose is the first sugar unit attached to diosgenin according to GLC. 25D‐Spirosta‐3, 5‐diene was formed during the hydrolysis of the saponin.
