2,4‐Dinitrophenydrazones of benzaldehyde, salicyladehyde, m ‐hydroxybenzaldehyde, p ‐hydroxybenzaldehyde, p ‐anisaldehyde, protocatechuic aldehyde, vanillin, isovanillin, o ‐vanillin, heliotropin (or piperonal), syringaldehyde, and gallaldehyde trimethyl ether were prepared. Ultoaviolet and infrared absorption spectra of these hydrazones were compared from a viewpoint of variation in their hydroxylation patterns. An attempt to separate these compounds by means of Silica‐gel thin layer chromatography is also described.
