Two varieties of spearmint grasses were collected to determine the yields of the essntial oil as well as the chemical constituents of the oil. The annual production of the Japanese improved variety grass was about 10,000–18,000 kg/ha. and that of the essential oil was about 20 kg/ha. The oil is mainly composed of 53.4% (—)‐carvone and 27.5% (—)‐limonene. The annual production of the Ryan‐Fong variety grass was about 30,000 kg/ha. which in turn yielded about 80 kg/ha of the essential oil. The oil contains 5% (—)‐limonene, 60% pulegone, and 30% rotundifolone. The ultraviolet spectrum of rotundifolone semicarbazone in methanol showed maxima at 273–274 m μ ., which was slightly different from the value reported by Indian investigator. The reason for it was inquired.
