In order to investigate the effect. of high energy irradiation on polyvinyl chloride, an attempt was made to examine the molecular weight distribution of polyvinyl chloride manufactured by the Formosan Plastic Co., using two solvent systems; cyclohexanone‐acetone‐methanol and mesityl oxide‐acetone‐methanol. The polyvinyl chloride was fractionated at 25°C with precipitation method into many fractions. It was found that for the preparation of fractions for the study of radiation effect, the solvent system cyclohexanone‐acetone‐methanol is preferred, because the solvent system mesityl oxide‐acetone‐methanol failed to give a good fractionation for higher molecular weight fractions of polyvinyl chloride. The molecular weight distribution of polyvinyl chloride was also discussed.
