For antimicrobial study, β‐(2‐benzofuryl)acrylic acid has been synthesized in eighty per cent yield by the Knoevenagel reaction. Also prepared were its fifteen derivatives. In a preliminary antifungal test, the free acid exhibited a marked activity, while its functional derivatives were either less active or completely inactive under similar experimental conditions. The detailed results of the antifungal and antibacterial studies will be reported later.
