The reduction of dichromate ion by hypoposphorous acid in sulfuric acid solution has been found to be of the second order with respect to HCrO 4 − and of the first order with respect to the total concentration of H 3 PO 2 . The existence of the active form of hypophosphorous acid and the intermediate state of HCr 2 O 6 − ion was presumed. From the mesurable rate of reaction, the reaction mechanism was proposed as follows:where HCr 2 O 6 − was rapidly reduced to Cr[III]. The average value of k 1 k 3 / k 2 was estimated as 466 at 25°C.
