Hinokitiol (β‐isopropyl tropolone; C 10 H 12 O 2 ) was electrolytically reduced in a polarograph in universal buffers containing phenylacetic acid at 30° C. The dependencies of the half‐wave potentials and diffusion current for different pH values and concentrations were observed. A single wave was found in the polarograms obtained in acid and in alkaline buffers while two waves were round in neutral buffers. Apparent diffusion coefficients were calculated from the Ilkovic equation and the effect of pH on D value was shown. It was found that the ionization constant of Hinokitiol obtained from the polarographic data in 0.2% alcohol solution was in good agreement with those obtained from potentiometric titration.
