The transformation of glucose and fructose to 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in ionic liquid is an important reaction in biomass processing. On page 327 (DOI: 10.1002/jcc.24214 ), Arifin, Maneeporn Puripat, Daisuke Yokogawa, Vudhichai Parasuk, and Stephan Irle elucidate the complicated reaction mechanisms of transformation by revealing the molecular orbitals, the solvation structures, and the energy profiles.
