Can being socially responsible serve as a successful corporate strategy? Yes, say the authors of this article. And auditors need to understand reporting standards and trends in this developing area. Many organizations are taking responsibility for their impact on society and the environment‐and turning it into a competitive advantage. The authors give an overview for auditors: how corporate social responsibility (CSR) fits into corporate strategy, CSR reporting standards, and current trends. Auditors should pay special attention to developments in third‐party assurance, and the role of internal auditors in this area. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
