A couple of years ago commissioning an activity‐based costing (ABC) project could have meantarmies of cost accountants locking themselves away in darkened rooms for months on end before any meaningfulresults were generated, only to have them summarily dismissed by line managers as being out of date andunreliable. Here we attempt to dispel this common misconception about ABC and reassess its value and exactlywhat constitutes best practice today. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
