Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the key cell type in the development of liver fibrosis. Despite their importance, the identification of HSCs in bulky tissue has remained challenging. Coherent anti‐ Stokes Raman scattering microscopy (CARS) can be used to identify HSCs in the liver of a living mouse. HSCs are the main target of novel nanomedical strategies in the development of a treatment for liver fibrosis. Their role in the vitamin A metabolism and the exceptionally high Raman cross section of retinyl compounds make CARS the ideal tool for this otherwise challenging task.
