A microphotograph of the cross section of a brachiocephalic artery taken from a 6‐month‐old ApoE/LDLR‐/‐mouse (a) with the investigated area (b, i). (c, j) show the investigated area of BCA stained with hematoxylin and eosin method (blue‐nuclei, pink‐elastic lamina) as well as with calcium deposition (black) stained with Van Koss method; (d, l) show the autofluorescence of the sample connected with the presence of elastin features (internal elastic lamina and fibrous cap) and Hb; Raman mapping: Integration maps of: (e, m) a band centered at 1130 cm –1 or 745 cm –1 (Hb), (f, k) CH stretching band approx. in the region 2800–3020 cm –1 , (g) cholesterol band around 745 cm –1 and (h, n) cholesteryl ester at 2887 cm –1 . The yellow color corresponds to the highest relative intensity of integrated band or distribution of compound/group of compounds. Sampling densities were equal to 660 nm (d–h) and 1.67 mm (k–n).
