Machine protection systems are used at high power particle accelerators in order to prevent long downtimes due to equipment damage. No systematic way to measure their success at reaching this goal exists (the performance of machine protection systems). This paper briefly goes through the history of particle accelerators and gives an introduction to machine protection for particle accelerators. Two metrics to measure the performance of machine protection systems are suggested and discussed. This paper is part of the work to define the problem from the perspective of a recently initiated PhD‐student project.
