This paper presents a Systems Engineering [SE] approach for the Design and Development [D&D] of Unmanned Mission Systems built around Mini / Micro Aerial Vehicles [M‐UAV / MAV]. Life‐cycle concepts and issues are addressed with emphasis on the usage of automation and matrix methods in the fuzzy front‐end of design. An automated model‐based design framework to systematically explore a large design space is presented in the main paper. Typical problems associated with MAV design, such as sizing and selection of components based on minimal and often‐incomplete information, means to navigate D&D pitfalls and Systems Integration [SI] challenges are qualitatively addressed in the process. Region‐specific issues that are often encountered in the Indian developmental context are also included. The team's approach to MICAV 2014 , a National MAV Design Competition jointly organized by CSIR‐NAL and DRDO‐ADE which had been used to fine‐tune the Design Framework post‐competition, is used to illustrate case‐examples.
