Large‐scale projects require from engineers more than just being experts in their respective technical discipline. Engineers, and especially Systems Engineers, are required to have an understanding of the disciplines related to theirs and also to possess many personal attributes and skills that enable effective and efficient communication among the project members. However, most education programs for engineers and system engineers still focus mainly on the technical competence. The acquisition of the other required skills is not part of the structured education and therefore difficult to evaluate whether and to which extent an engineer has developed these. This paper discussed an approach to structure the practicing of engineers to become experienced Systems Engineers, and well suited for the needs of large‐scale projects and based on the principles of the craftsmen tradition of “Journeyman Years”.
