The approach presented in this paper describes how specifications can be created right first time. This includes identifying the real customer needs, and avoiding both over‐ and under‐specification. Another result is a complete functional view on the deliverable to specify that is a valuable element to have an efficient communication between all involved parties starting from customers and stakeholders to project leader and designer. The key is the right selection and combination of methods for the project related situation on the one hand. On the other hand the tailoring of each applied method is as much as important than the right method selection itself. The approach is validated by different projects specifying different deliverables in different time frames.
