This paper asks the question “What is Systems Engineering for Embedded Systems?” First the scene is set by discussing the prevalence of embedded systems in the world around us including examples, design metrics, and technology issues such as processor architecture. Then the aspects of Systems Engineering that apply to embedded systems are discussed in some detail with a focus on requirements issues such as end product utility and power management. This is followed by a discussion of the System Design issues relating to embedded systems such as real time operation, size & weight and cost. Some focus is applied to the issue of data management for embedded systems. Finally some tool related issues are discussed.
