The discipline of systems engineering continues to mature, but no systems engineer has ever been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In their subtle way the Nobel committee have been encouraging economists, politicians and others to put more attention to the global socio‐technical challenges that face the planet today. This paper will explore the essence of the systems engineering framework and suggest ways in which systems engineering practitioners, researchers and educators can rise to meet these challenges.
