A case can be made that the most significant change in systems engineering over the last several decades has been the growth of validation along with significant changes in its meaning. Validation has come from nonexistence to being one of the major elements of the discipline. However, this has not happened without issues and challenges that continue today. This paper addresses the changes in the way various standards have reflected the use of validation, how organizations have approached it, and what is currently happening in its practice. This paper identifies several issues and provides approaches to deal with them.
