The increased demand being placed on the dwindling resources of developing countries by rising populations, and the need to compete with more advanced nations in the global economy, have forced the implementation of projects that are stifling socioeconomic growth. The need to apply systems engineering concepts and methodologies in the field of socioeconomic engineering is discussed. A proposal for a collaborative effort of systems engineering experts working with targeted professional bodies to initiate a paradigm shift toward increased self‐reliance is outlined.
