This paper describes current and probable stochastic shocks that may shape the practice of systems engineering in the near future. This is not about predicting the future but about considering possibilities, ramifications and probabilities. The purpose of this paper is to encourage the reader to add, change, or delete entries that are more pertinent to their respective situations and viewpoints, then to think deeply about the interrelationships of these change factors thus the key alternative scenarios for the reader's future. One general conclusion seems clear – the SE practitioner of 2003 will be largely obsolete in five to seven to ten years unless he/she vigorously engages in multidisciplinary learning both across engineering disciplines and especially outside of engineering.
