In this paper, a strategy for the design of optimal systems solutions is developed and assessed. The main areas of investigation focus on the use of a formal approach, based on mathematical systems theory. A specific methodology for the ‘decomposition’ of system trade‐offs, for use in identification of optimal system solutions, is explored in detail. The practical difficulties of accurately identifying the best (optimal) system solution ‐ particularly for complex systems that are subject to imposed implementation constraints and are part of some extended hierarchical construct ‐ are also addressed. The paper concludes with recommendations with regard to a proposed strategy for complex systems optimisation.
