This paper describes the analysis of a hypothetical command and control architecture for a proposed future land force conducting maneuver operations under various conditions. The Systems Engineering tool CORE® has been used to capture the user needs, and to develop a hierarchy of functions necessary to implement the proposed command and control system. CORE also facilitates behavioral modeling of the functional architecture. This paper shows how the tool can be used to analyze the performance of candidate physical architectures based on a common functional architecture. The models that are formed serve as valuable aids for the user to evaluate novel operational concepts, and for the system architects to determine productive areas for research into improving technological support for command and control.
