A university accepts the challenge to create a new Master of Science curriculum needed by industry. Industry declares a major shortfall in knowledgeable systems engineers and an inability to knowingly identify the capabilities of those practitioners that are available. Add to that mixture, a professional base that is still debating how to define itself and the boundaries that govern its practice. These are just some of the elements faced by Southern Polytechnic State University and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company (both based in Marietta, Georgia) in developing a joint Certificate Program and a Master of Science in Systems Engineering Degree Program. And these concerns do not take into account other issues that every new curriculum faces.
