This paper contends that there is a strong relationship between disciplined thought by the individual and the system engineering process. The paper explores this relationship by discussing ideas on how people think and illustrating by analogy the closeness of this activity to that of system engineering. The significance of this is that if individuals perform disciplined reflective thinking in a systematic manner then as a collective whole they are more naturally inclined to follow the general principles of good system engineering practice.
